The Pirates have made a roster move following short stop Oneil Cruz’s surgery that will force him to miss around four months, according to the organization.
Infielder Mark Mathias has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis and will start at second base for the Pirates Monday night at PNC Park against the World Series Champion Houston Astros.
Mathias will bat in the 8 spot.
Mathias has a .256 career batting average over 162 career games, making his debut in 2020 with the Milwaukee Brewers.
He has six home runs, 24 RBI and an on base percentage of .307 over 117 at bats.
Cruz has moved to the 10-day injured list.
He fractured his left ankle and also has soft tissue damage around the area.
The Pirates begin a three-game series against the Astros at home beginning Monday at 6:35 p.m.
All games can be heard live on 93.7 The Fan.
