PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Steelers tight end Rodney Williams went viral for helping out his coach at the end of the game on Sunday. On Monday, he described the scene and maybe what he’ll get out of the assist.
Last play of the game, Damontae Kazee intercepted a pass and eventually ran over to the sidelines, as he was pushed late by a Green Bay player, he knocked over special teams coach Danny Smith. That started a scrum on the sidelines. As the pushing and shoving was happening, Williams noticed Smith was trying to get out from the bottom.
Williams said he wanted to make sure the training staff could get to him.
“I just saw him down there,” Williams said Monday. “He was trying to scoot out of here, but he couldn’t move, for real. I just had to get my dawg out of the pile.”
Williams said he saw kicker Chris Boswell pull a couple of people out of the pile. He said the 32-year-old Boswell has that ‘dad strength’ where with his grip is wasn’t going to let go of you.
He said it’s not the first or last scuffle that will happen, especially when one of the guys gets hit late.
So what did Smith say to him?
“He didn’t say much,” Williams said. “He was just chewing his gum. He really didn’t say much.”
Chewing gum is something the veteran coach is known for and he said even though he was pretty violently knocked to the ground, he never lost his gum. Williams said he’s not sure how he pulled that off. He said after he helped his coach up, Smith picked up something he dropped and then walked away.
“He’s a tough guy,” Williams said. “A tough guy.”
Williams is going to check out to see if he has a softer side too. Or maybe would get a little something for helping out his coach. Maybe the beneficiary of a trick play on special teams this week?
“I’m about to talk to him about it,” Williams said with a smile. “See if I can get a fake punt or something. We’ll see.”
