Pirates first overall draft pick Henry Davis had a good debut in High-A Greensboro on Thursday.
The 21-year-old catcher out of Louisville went 1 for 3 with a triple and scored in Greensboro’s 5-4 win against the Winston-Salem Dash.
Davis also nearly hit an inside the park home run in his first at bat, only to be thrown out by a half step.
It was Davis’ first game for the Grasshoppers, skipping Low-A Bradenton after spending a little over a week in the Pirates rookie Florida Complex League.
Davis signed a $6.5 million signing bonus after being picked first overall and homered and doubled in his debut last week going 3-for-7 in two games in the FCL.
If Davis preforms well in Greensboro, it’s likely he could move to Double-A Altoona in mid-2022.
The 55-32 Grasshoppers take on Winston-Salem again on Friday and Davis will get his first chance to catch Pirates top pitching prospect Quinn Priester.
In other draft news, it is being reported that shortstop/ third round draft pick Bubba Chandler is making his debut for the Pirates in the FCL Friday. He’s the designated hitter, batting third.
