EXCLUSIVE: Williamson ready to contribute to Steeler D

The newest Steelers linebacker just needs a trip to Primanti Bros.

From the outhouse to the penthouse, linebacker Avery Williamson made his Pittsburgh debut not on the field but rather with the PM Team on 93.7 The Fan Tuesday.

Williamson, who goes from 0-8 in New York to 7-0 in Pittsburgh, arrived in Pittsburgh on Monday and made it official by taking a photo at the Franco Harris statue inside the airport.

Williamson tells Poni and Mueller he heard on Saturday there was a good chance he would be traded and found out after the Jets got blown out by the Chiefs on Sunday that it was more likely. After landing in New York his agent told him it was official.

"It was kind of surreal man, you know just knowing I'm going to trade teams in the middle of the season and going to a team that's going to be competing for a Super Bowl, that's pretty inside," said Williamson.

Earlier on Tuesday, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Williamson loves the game.

Williamson confirmed that saying he loves the game of football and while things weren't going well this season with the Jets, he still played hard.

"I don't care if the score is 40-0, I'll still go hard," said Williamson.

While he's excited to be joining the Steelers, Williamson says he was still giving it his all in New York and will miss his teammates.

"Love a lot of guys there man, my boys, so I wanted to make sure I was sticking around there for them but you know some things you can't control, if the team decided to trade you, that's out of your control."

He also tore his ACL last year and missed the entire 2019 season. Since coming back in 2020, he says his knee feels fine and there wasn't been any swelling.

"I'm just excited to play for this team," added Williamson saying he "marvels" at the Steelers defense and never thought he would get to play for Pittsburgh.

Williamson says he is known for his tackling. "I feel like I'm a sideline to sideline guy and very instinctual and I just got a knack to stop the run and third down, I'm defiantly excited just to be a part of whenever I get my opportunities to be on the field on third down just using my skill set on rushing the backs and that's something I feel like I do a good job in."

Williamson is also excited to play for Mike Tomlin. "He's just super chill."

Bud Dupree and Cam Heyward and Devin Bush all reached out to Williamson to welcome him to Pittsburgh.

Due to COVID protocols, Williamson can't practice for five days but says he will keep up with cardio until he can enter the team's facilities.

But before any of that, the guys told Williamson he needs to get a Primanti Bros. right away and take a photo of him eating the iconic sandwich.
