PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Added to the Steelers roster a couple of weeks into training camp, former first round pick Andrus Peat will be protecting Aaron Rodgers blind side Sunday against the Bills.
Peat was able to win a competition with NFL veteran Calvin Anderson for his first start at tackle since 2023 with the Saints. The 6’7”, 316-pound offensive lineman started 12 games that season with three holding calls and a pair of false starts over his 809 snaps.
“I always am ready to play,” Peat said Friday. “Been a starter most of my career, I always try to prepare like that, keep myself in that mindset.”
New Orleans selected Peat with the 13th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Now 32, Peat has started 104 games, mostly at left guard and played in 127 in the NFL. He was voted to three consecutive Pro Bowls, with the last coming in 2020.
“Definitely appreciate it, it’s a chance to start,” Peat said. “Go out there and play for the Steelers. It’s a great opportunity, I’m excited for it.”
Peat said he’s enjoyed being around Aaron Rodgers and had the last laugh in their college rivalry as Stanford beat Rodgers alma mater, Cal last week. He said they had a brief conversation about that, but Sunday he’s trying to protect Rodgers his Steelers teammate.
He’s aware Rodgers is dealing with an injury and doesn’t put any more pressure on himself to keep his 41-year-old QB with a broken wrist safe. Peat said he’s always working extra time to stay sharp for this opportunity and is working to provide Rodgers with that extra half-second or whatever he can give the QB by finishing his block.
It’s a critical game for the Steelers and Peat said he’s just excited to play in a matchup like this after missing the post-season the last four years.
