Pirates infielder/outfielder Cole Tucker is now a former Pirates.

The Arizona Diamondbacks claimed Tucker off of waivers on Sunday after Pittsburgh designated him for assignment last week.

The Diamondbacks were in Pittsburgh for a three-game series over the weekend, but Tucker was not in town Sunday. The Pirates took two of three from Arizona.

The Diamondbacks optioned Tucker to their Triple-A affiliate in Reno, Nevada.

Tucker, a Phoenix native, was the Pirates 1st round draft pick in 2014, taken 24th overall, but never developed into that into the player he was expected to be in the Pirates’ organization.

Tucker has a .211 career batting average over 154 games in the MLB, batting .175 this season over 63 at bats. He had two RBI, no home runs, 28 strike outs and zero walks.

His defense was decent, committing two error at short stop and zero in the outfield.

The Diamondbacks are hoping the 25-year-old can get a rhythm at the plate in Reno. This is the final option year for Tucker, meaning he’ll need to be on an active roster moving forward.
