Former Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle is back in baseball.

Hurdle, who was fired in September 2019 by the Pirates, has been hired by the Colorado Rockies as a special assistant to the organization's general manager Bill Schmidt.

MLB.com's Thomas Harding says that Hurdle's role will involve player development.

Hurdle was the Rockies manager from 2002-2009, leading the Rockies to their only World Series appearance in 2007.

"I mean, he's Clint, right? He's upbeat. He has a lot of history with the Rockies back to when he first started and with the people who got involved," Schmidt told MLB.com "He can help us get better. That's why I asked. I was very happy that he wanted to join us, just helping people grow."

Hurdle will begin his new job on January 1, 2022.

MLB players are currently locked out by the owners.
