Former Pitt assistant, BC head coach to be 1st interview

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – One of the most in demand coaching candidates and someone who previously called the South Side home will be the Steelers first official interview to replace Mike Tomlin on Friday according to ESPN.

Former Pitt assistant and current Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley will talk with Art Rooney and GM Omar Khan.

The 46-year-old already interviewed with Atlanta, Las Vegas, Tennessee, Miami and Arizona.

Hafley was the head coach at Boston College before leaving for a defensive coordinator job in the NFL. He led the Eagles to bowl eligibility in three of his four years. After four seasons at Albany, Hafley came to Pitt to coach defense for four years, three as defensive backs coach where he worked with Hall of Famer Darrelle Revis. The New Jersey native also worked as the co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State in 2019 with a defensive tops in the nation in yards allowed per play, total defense and sacks.

There is some NFL experience, in 2012, two years with Tampa Bay’s secondary that included Ronde Barber, then to Cleveland with Joe Haden and San Francisco.

Green Bay’s defense allowed 21.7 points per game (13th in the NFL), it allowed 29.3 points per game in the last three without injured All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons.
