PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Most of the time it’s others commenting on his job, Tuesday night is was Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro taking the mic to not talk politics, but Pitt basketball.
A former high school basketball team captain, Shapiro was the invited guest of Pitt radio basketball analyst and former Panthers great Curtis Aiken during the first half of the Panthers game against Syracuse on 93.7 The Fan.
Shapiro came prepared. Knowing not only the players, but several of the team’s stats and where it stood on a national basis. There was no awkwardness, it was as if the three (Shapiro, Aiken and Voice of the Panthers Bill Hillgrove) had been together all season.
“I still love the game,” Shapiro said during the broadcast on 93.7 The Fan and the Pitt Panthers Radio Network. “I still play. I had a chance to coach my kids. There is nothing like this game.”
“I think a lot about basketball when I try to govern every day. Everybody’s got to work together. Everybody’s got to move the ball. Everybody’s got a job to do. If everybody does their job well. You are going to be able to put some points on the board.”
The Governor’s daughter is a Pitt graduate and his son a Pitt sophomore.
Shapiro was also helping promote Project 14. A multi-faceted initiative led by Aiken focusing on uplifting Black business leaders and providing amenities for all, including a coffee shop, office and event space, a speakeasy, a wellness center, a business incubator, and a unique view of Pittsburgh (located along the Monongahela River).
He even knew how to sign off during his part of the broadcast.
“Thank you guys, H.2.P. (the acronym for Hail to Pitt),” Shapiro said.
