LATROBE (93.7 The Fan) – UPDATED--Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy announced before practice first-round pick Max Iheanachor would not practice Monday at St. Vincent College, but he did dress full and was able to do a couple of limited reps. He's been battling a neck/shoulder injury from late last week, now game week starts and his participation in the preseason opener Thursday against the Packers remains doubt.
Iheanachor was really coming on during the first two days in pads before the injury. The offensive tackle has been able to watch practice, just not participate, other than the few limited opportunities.
With Iheanachor mostly not practicing, more reps for Broderick Jones. And he’s making an impression with his head coach.
“I thought Broderick picked it up the last two practices,” McCarthy said. “With the opportunities, the reps available with Max not practicing, we had a conversation with his ability to play both left and right.”
McCarthy said Jones is not 100% back yet and whether he will play Thursday at Acrisure Stadium, or how much, could be limited because he’s returning from his own season-ending neck injury. Jones starred during Saturday’s night practice in Latrobe having a number of strong reps during one-on-one drills against the team’s primary pass-rushers.
“I thought he definitely picked it up the last two practices,” McCarthy said.
Veterans DK Metcalf, Sebastian Joseph-Day, Michael Pittman, Cam Heyward, TJ Watt did not go through the open practice on Monday.
