If one NFL Network insider is correct, the situation between the Steelers and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is a little more serious than previously thought.
Mike Garafolo is reporting that the Steelers have not yet made an offer to Porter Jr.
“I’ve talked to sources familiar with the progress of talks, there hasn’t been an offer from the Steelers,” said Garafolo.
Garafolo adds that he’s told the Steelers want to see him perform and prove it on the field.
“Well, if you’re Joey Porter Jr. . . . you didn’t have to see Nick Herbig on the field before you got him done, back in the spring,” said Garafolo. “He wasn’t participating in the offseason workouts before they did a four-year, $100 million deal with the linebacker there.”
Garafolo also says that the words of Mike McCarthy, calling the situation at “an impasse” during a news conference on Monday has likely got Porter Jr.’s attention.
“Impasse is usually ‘hey, we both made a run at it and we just haven’t been able to get a deal done’, doesn’t seem like the Steelers, financially, have made a run at it, at this point,” said Garafolo.
Over the weekend, Jordan Schultz reported that there are some teams “have wondered” about looking into Porter Jr. being a trade piece.
It’s also been reported that no one has directly reached out to the Steelers about Porter Jr.
