Keith McPherson welcomed NFL Draft prospect Kenny Pickett onto the show Thursday night, sparking an entertaining discussion between a pair of Monmouth County products.
Both grew up in Ocean Township, New Jersey, where Pickett became a high school standout before rising to stardom at Pittsburgh, where his viral fake slide forever changed the game of football, and his 42 touchdown passes landed him third in last year’s Heisman voting.
But Pickett’s draft stock was called into question when his official hand size measurements at the combine came in at 8.5 inches, leading many to question how Pickett would even grip a football, despite watching him do just that for years at the college level.
Of course, that isn’t much of a topic anymore after the measurement grew to 8.625 inches (though that would still be the smallest hand size among NFL quarterbacks) at the Panthers’ pro day, and Pickett wound up showing out at the combine anyway, putting to rest a concern that Pickett never believed truly existed.
“There wasn’t much talk about to after the night of throwing,” Pickett told Keith. “I felt like I had a great workout. I knew that’s how it was gonna be. I had a great Senior Bowl week and I played well in the game, so it was just going out there and doing my thing.”
Pickett figures to be a first-round pick and potentially the first quarterback taken in the draft, and with there being no correlation between hand size and struggles at the NFL level, the hand size matter can probably be put to rest for good.
“It was something I feel like the media definitely got carried away with,” Pickett said. “Really was not a question asked by a lot of teams. So I’m excited to hear my name called and start my next journey.”
