Tis the season for strong basketball throughout the region with great games and impressive standout performances on the hardwood.
This season, KDKA Radio will again nominate players each week to join the KDKA Radio Super 7 Awards watch list. Every Monday, a new crop of players will be unveiled based on their efforts that previous week. At the end of the year, KDKA Radio will announce the winners of the award for each WPIAL boys and girls classification, as well as the Pittsburgh City League.
Here are the top performances from Week 3:
Nathan Schanbacher, North Hills
Schanbacher has been one of the WPIAL’s top scorers in the opening weeks of the season.
On Friday, he scored 33 points in a 58-56 win over Seneca Valley. He followed with 30 points the following afternoon in an impressive 75-62 win over Mars.
A junior and three-year starter, Schanbacher has North Hills at 4-3 this season.
Bella Dumbroski, Serra Catholic
Dumbroski has been a massive contributor for Serra Catholic over the last two seasons, establishing herself as one of the district’s top scorers as just a freshman last year.
Last week, she went for 26 points in a win over Bishop Canevin, 29 points in a victory over Avella and 25 points in a blowout of Mapletown.
Dumbroski’s brother, Owen, was a standout must-sport athlete for Serra Catholic who is in his freshman year at Westmoreland Community College, where he plays baseball.
Serra Catholic has won five straight since a pair of losses to open its season.
Jason Fredericks, North Catholic
North Catholic has played as geographically diverse of a schedule as any team in the WPIAL. Against district foes, the Trojans have been tremendous, as has Fredericks.
Last week, he scored 31, 12 and 20 points in wins over Freeport, Valley and Newport Central (KY).
North Catholic has played eight games so far, with five coming against opponents from out of the district or out of the state.
Fredericks has an offer from Wooster College, Washington & Jefferson, Westminster and York College.
Bailey White, Allderdice
A frequent Super 7 nominee, Bailey White is off and running with another strong season.
Last week, she scored 34 points in an impressive win over Fox Chapel and then 40 points in a runaway victory over Perry, becoming Allderdice's all-time scorer.
White is the twi-time reigning KDKA Radio Super 7 City League player of the year. She is also a standout track and cross country athlete with collegiate interest in both sports.
