The front half of section play begins to come to a close this week with the chase for the postseason set to heat up. This past week, several teams took a solid step towards their playoff goals and were led by some dazzling individual efforts.
This season, KDKA Radio will again nominate players each week to join the KDKA Radio Super 7 Awards watch list. Every Monday, a new crop of players will be unveiled based on their efforts that previous week. At the end of the year, KDKA Radio will announce the winners of the award for each WPIAL boys and girls classification, as well as the Pittsburgh City League.
Here are the top performances from Week 6:
Drew Allen, Bishop Canevin
Bishop Canevin is off to a strong start in section play with a 4-0 mark in Section 2-3A.
Drew Allen has paced the Crusaders so far this year, including a trio of solid wins last week.
Allen scored 18, 27 and 24 points in wins over Carlynton, Keystone Oaks and West Mifflin respectively.
In the game against Carlynton, the senior crossed the 1,000 point mark in his career.
Juliette Leroux, South Fayette
Speaking of 1,000 point scorers, Juliette Leroux hit the career milestone in an impressive week for the Lions.
Last week, Leroux dropped in 19 and 31 points in wins over perennially strong programs in Chartiers Valley and Norwin, eclipsing the 1,000 point mark against the Knights thanks, in large part, to five made 3-pointers.
Leroux, a senior, is committed to Florida Atlantic.
South Fayette, meanwhile, is 14-1 without a loss to a WPIAL opponent this season.
Justin Fry, Thomas Jefferson
It’s been a blistering first half of the season for Thomas Jefferson, with just one loss and none to WPIAL opponents.
Last week, the Jaguars picked up three wins, with Fry playing big roles in each.
The junior poured in 26, 25 and 18 points in wins over Bethel Park, Montour and Ellwood City.
Fry and the Jaguars are now 13-1 and 5-a in Section 3-5A.
Annsley Baker, Beaver
Annsley Baker has put up big numbers for Beaver the last couple of seasons, but really went wild scoring the basketball last week.
The junior scored 20 points in a 59-29 win over rival Central Valley Monday, and followed with a remarkable 44-point outburst in a 62-39 win over Lincoln Park on Thursday.
The wins pushed the Bobcats to 8-5 overall with a 4-1 mark in Section 2-4A.
A multi-sport athlete, the Baker was named All-WPIAL and All-State last season.
KDKA Radio’s coverage of high school basketball continues this Friday as Woodland Hills visits Pine-Richland. Listen to the game on 100.1 FM, AM-1020 or the Audacy app.
