The basketball season is underway with a number of season-opening tournaments and invitationals played throughout the region this past week and with a handful of players posting massive numbers to begin their year.
This season, KDKA Radio will again nominate players each week to join the KDKA Radio Super 7 Awards watch list. Every Monday, a new crop of players will be unveiled based on their efforts that previous week. At the end of the year, KDKA Radio will announce the winners of the award for each WPIAL boys and girls classification, as well as the Pittsburgh City League.
Here are the top performances from Week 1:
Andrew Corfield, South Side
No one this season has scored more points in a game than Corfield.
The senior dropped 24 points in a win over 72-54 win over New Brighton Tuesday and then exploded for 46 points in a 92-57 blowout of Burgettstown on Friday.
A three-sport athlete (football, basketball and baseball), Corfield led the Rams on the football field with over 1,100 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns, and is now carrying over that success to the court, where he is already a 1,000-point scorer in his career.
Aubree Hupp, Blackhawk
One of the top girls basketball players in the WPIAL, Hupp has Blackhawk off to an expected strong start in 2025-26.
Last week, she had a trio of strong performances, guiding the Cougars to impressive early season wins.
Hupp scored 24 points against Neshannock Monday, 18 points Thursday vs Avonworth and then went for 21 points and pulled in a remarkable, school record 27 rebounds against Forest Hills on Saturday.
A senior, Hupp is committed to Division I Canisius.
Tyler Basic, Elizabeth Forward
After a pair of early losses, Basic got Elizabeth Forward’s ship righted in a hurry thanks to a couple of big scoring outputs.
Basic scored 29 points in a 72-68 win over Bethel Park Tuesday and 36 points in a 66-56 win over Trinity Friday. He also knocked down five 3-pointers and scored 29 points in a 65-59 loss to a strong Uniontown team Saturday.
A year ago, Basic led the Warriors with nearly 17 points per game.
Isabel Chaparro, Riverview
Chaparro has been filing the net in the early stages of the 2025-26 season.
The sharpshooter scored 22 points against Brashear Wednesday in a 58-33 win and then 21 points in a loss to West Mifflin on Friday. But Chaparro saved her best for Saturday, draining an incredible nine 3-pointers and scoring 44 points in a 67-50 victory over California.
Also a strong soccer player, Chaparro is committed to Division III University of Mary Washington.
Broadcast coverage of high school basketball begins Friday as Montour visits Lincoln Park. You can hear the game on 100.1 FM and AM-1020 KDKA, as well as the Audacy app.
