We hit the home stretch of the WPIAL and City League Basketball season, and teams across the region are making their final push for playoff spots and section titles.
Throughout the 2021-2022 high school basketball season, KDKA Radio will recognizes some of the top boys and girls basketball players from the WPIAL and Pittsburgh City League.
At the end of the season, along with a fan vote, the KDKA Radio high school sports staff will name the Super 7 Basketball award winners.
This week, we salute two boys basketball players who are among the district’s scoring leaders and two girls players helping charge their programs toward the postseason with high level play.
Devin Carney, Butler
It took a half, but Carney proved why he is one of the WPIAL’s most dynamic scorers of the basketball Friday night in Butler’s 82-80 win over Pine-Richland in a game you heard on NewsRadio KDKA.
Carney dropped in 27 points, with 23 coming in the second half, as Butler got a key road win to help keep their playoff hopes alive.
The 6-1 senior is committed to Division I Elon University and is scoring over 25 points per game for the Golden Tornado this season.
Mallory Daly, Seton LaSalle
Daly, who burst onto the WPIAL scene as a freshman at Brentwood last year, has been a constant figure among the leading scorers list in the district this season.
She is averaging over 24 points per game and, on Monday, rattled off 36 points in a 71-45 win over California.
So far this year, the Rebels are 13-5 overall with a 6-1 mark in Section 2-2A.
Daly’s older sister, Delaney, played at Seton LaSalle and went on to have a solid career at Carlow University.
Markus Frank, Quaker Valley
Last week, we told you about Adou Thiero, who has helped Quaker Valley to an unbeaten start to the season. Frank is the other half of the Quakers’ dynamic duo.
The 6-6 forward had helped the Quakers to a 16-0 record and an 11-0 mark in Section 2-4A.
On Saturday, Frank went for 31 more points in a 72-47 win over Obama Academy.
Frank is scoring over 27 points per game this season and is among the top ten scorers in the district this season.
Reilly Sunday, Moon
There’s no rest with this Sunday.
Reilly Sunday has established herself as one of the most versatile guards in the WPIAL over the course of her career at Moon.
The 5-9 senior has formed a nice tandem with classmate Emma Theodorsson, a Bucknell commit, to help the Tigers to a 15-3 record this season.
Despite missing her junior season with a knee injury, she returned to the Moon lineup this year and is scoring over 17 points per game.
Last week, she scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a Senior Night win over Oakland Catholic.
Sunday is committed to play for Duquesne next season.
Friday night, be sure to tune into 1020-AM and 100.1 FM NewsRadio KDKA for coverage of Fox Chapel at Central Catholic. Beginning at 6 p.m. the KDKA Radio team of Josh Rowntree, Rick Dayton, Mike White, Cale Berger and Ben Tenuta will bring you all of the audio and video content from the week’s biggest game!
