Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto posthumously awarded Roberto Clemente the key to the City of Pittsburgh Wednesday as Major League Baseball celebrates Roberto Clemente Day.
Clemente's family accepted the key on his behalf.
"Dad was so proud of being a Puerto Rican, but also for the fact that this city gave him the opportunity to play his whole career that he always said he will never, ever play for no one else but the Pirates," said Clemente's son Luis Clemente.
Peduto announced Wednesday there is legislation in the works that will change the name of Roberto Clemente Dr. in Oakland to Roberto and Vera Clemente Dr. in honor of the former Pirates' late wife.
"The Clemente's were revered, not only because of the way that we lost Roberto, but because of the way he lived," Peduto said. "He lived in a way that all of us should. He lived in a way that gave back to those that had the least."
MLB announced Sept. 15, which is the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, will be recognized as Roberto Clemente Day in perpetuity.
