According to Post-Gazette Pirates insider Jason Mackey, the Pirates are going to select the contract of infielder/outfielder Chris Owings.

Debuting for Arizona in 2013, the 31-year-old has also spent time with Kansas City, Boston, Colorado and Baltimore.

In 710 games in the MLB, Owings has a .239 batting average with and OPS of .653 and slugging .366.

He also has 37 home runs, 124 doubles and 220 RBI.

Owings signed with the Pirates as a free agent in February, being assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis.

He was played on the 7-day injured list in April and was activated on May 2.

It’s batting .273 in 13 games with the Indians this year with two home runs and four RBI.

While its unknown who Owings will take over for, Mackey believes that Mark Mathias “makes the most sense.”

Like Mathias, Owings is a utility man, batting .275 in 40 at bats with the Pirates this year.
