The Steelers offense didn’t look good on Saturday, managing to only score three points on a first half field goal from Chris Boswell.
National media appears to be making the same mistake Steelers fans did last during last year’s preseason, taking too much stock in games that don’t count.
After watching the Steelers preseason games in 2023, it looked like Kenny Pickett was going to be the next big thing in Pittsburgh.
That obviously ended up not being the case with Pickett being traded to Philadelphia in the offseason.
Fast forward to Saturday and many are already calling for Justin Fields to start over Russell Wilson.
Wilson was 8-of-10 for 47 yards. Justin Fields went 11-of-17 for 92 yards.
After that short stat line for Wilson, people like Stephen A. Smith, on ESPN’s First Take, are “very, very disgusted” by what they saw from him on Saturday.
Taking sacks and holding onto the ball too long during this outing has Smith saying that’s why Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton wanted Wilson out of Denver even though they owe him millions of dollars.
“I’m looking at Russell Wilson and I’m saying damn, this is why the Denver Broncos didn’t want him,” said Smith.
Smith took it even further, saying with the tough competition in the AFC North the “Steelers got last place written all over them . . . I don’t see how they get out of this.”
The Steelers quarterback situation may dissolve into something concerning but dude, it’s not even the regular season yet.
Everyone at The Fan has said after last season’s mirage with Pickett, don’t take what you see in the preseason as gospel. That also applies if the team doesn’t look yet.
ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky was among those nationally that believe Justin Fields should start the season for the Steelers.
Fan listeners seem to agree.
Meanwhile the real issue so far has been the offensive line.
