Pirates add veteran starter on minor league contract

PITTSBURH (93.7 The Fan) – A week before players report to Bradenton, the Pirates added a veteran starting pitcher on a minor league contract.

35-year-old Mike Clevinger pitched mostly in AAA last year and was injured most of 2024, but in his last full season in the majors he was 9-9 with a 3.77 ERA in 24 starts. He worked 131.1 innings with 110 strikeouts, 40 walks and a 1.22 WHIP in 2023. The right-hander’s best three seasons are from 2017-19 in Cleveland where he went 12-6, 3.11 ERA, 13-8 with a 3.02 ERA and 13-4 with a 2.71 ERA.

In AAA last year, Clevinger went 7-3 with a 4.20 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 100.2 innings. In eight MLB relief appearances in 2025 with the White Sox, he gave up five runs in 5.2 innings with three strikeouts and eight walks.
