PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Likely hidden under the radar because of the season Konnor Griffin had in the minors last year, Esmerlyn Valdez took a huge step as well. Pirates Insider Jason Mackey reports the right-handed hitting outfielder is getting called up to the majors.
Valdez (6’2”, 234 pounds), the Pirates number nine overall prospect, replaces Billy Cook on the roster.
This season at AAA, Valdez hit .253 with a .381 on-base percentage and .887 OPS. He hit 10 doubles, 10 home runs (six this month) with 29 RBI with Indianapolis.
Last season Valdez, 22, played in the Futures Game after 25 doubles, 26 home runs, 86 RBI, .286 batting average, .376 on-base and .896 OPS.
Cook’s last start was May 8 and he’s had only one at bat since that game. The 27-year-old was acquired from the Orioles two years ago.
