PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The Pirates end up making six trades during the week of the trade deadline. Closer Richard Rodriguez dealt to the Braves late on Friday along with reliever Austin Davis to Boston and minor league pitcher Braden Ogle to the Phillies. Part of the return, Pirates adding a pitcher with 22 games of MLB experience, a major league ready infielder, a minor league pitcher and minor league catcher.

RHP Bryse Wilson spilt time between the majors and AAA with Atlanta this season.  2-3, 4.83 ERA in 31.2 innings with the Braves in 7 starts, 21 strikeouts to 8 walks.  In AAA, 5-2, 4.23 ERA in 9 starts, 55.1 innings, 16 walks, 42 strikeouts.

Wilson will start his career with the Pirates and activated on Saturday.  Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said he can be a part of the young core of a rotation moving forward.

“Already had success at the major league level, pitched in the post-season,” Cherington said.  “He’s young.  We feel like he can come in and be a part of a group of young starting pitchers we are growing and developing.”

Chavis up with the Red Sox since June 24, batting .190 in 79 at bats after hitting .263 in AAA with 6 home runs.  The 25-year-old has 572 career MLB at bats with 25 home runs, 19 doubles, 83 RBI in 168 games with Boston.  The right-handed hitting Chavis was a first round pick in 2014.  The 5’10”, 210 pounder has shown power throughout his entire minor league career.

None of the other players in return for Rodriguez, MLB hits leader Adam Frazier, right-hand relief pitcher Clay Holmes, left-hand starter Tyler Anderson or Ogle will begin their Pirates careers in Pittsburgh.

Infielders Tucupita Marcano (Frazier trade) and Hoy Jun Park (Holmes trade) are in Triple A Indianapolis.  Power-hitting outfielder Jack Suwinski (Frazier trade), catcher Carter Bins (Anderson trade) and infielder Diego Castillo (Holmes trade) assigned to AA, Altoona.

Right-handed pitcher Michell Miliano (Frazier trade) is with High-A Greensboro and right-hand pitcher Ricky DeVito (Rodriguez trade) likely will join him there, Abrahan Gutierrez (Ogle trade) to Low-A Bradenton and right-handed pitcher Joaquin Tejada (Anderson trade) to the Pirates Dominican Summer League team.

“Our pro evaluation group did a ton of work on the guys that are coming in in terms of character and work ethic,” Cherington said.  “Feel really good about the people we are bringing in to the Pirates.  Adding in to our draft picks, we have added over 30 new players to the Pirates over the course of July.”
