PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Because you never can have enough right-handed relievers, the Pirates did get another before the 6p deadline even though it was announced nearly an hour after. Bucs sent Hunter Stratton to San Diego for Andrew Moore.
The 26-year-old Moore had a combined 3.46 ERA in 39 innings between AA and AAA this season with 62 strikeouts and 43 walks which added to a 1.64 WHIP. In 14.2 innings in AAA he allowed only 12 hits but walked 19 and struck out 17.
“It’s big stuff, big fastball,” said Pirates GM Ben Cherington. “We are actually going to bring him to Florida initially and spend a few days with him there and look at the delivery. His walk rate has been a little bit high and see if there are opportunities that are there.”
“Just a chance to get a relatively young guy with big stuff and a big fastball. We’ve had some success in the past helping guys get in the zone a little bit more, that will be the goal.”
A 14th round pick by the Mariners out of Chipola College in 2021, Moore has yet to reach the majors.
Stratton was designated for assignment on Saturday.
