PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – One of the Pirates young pitchers used in a trade to get a power bat Thursday night a source confirmed to 93.7 The Fan.
Bucs sent right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo, minor-league left-handed pitcher Tyler Samaniego and minor-league catcher Adonys Guzman to the Red Sox for AAA right-handed hitting outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia and minor-league pitcher, right-hander Jesus Travieso.
Garcia was the Red Sox number three prospect (85th overall by MLB.com) who hit 18 home runs with 58 RBI in 81 games last year with AAA Worcester with a .271 average, .334 on-base, .498 slugging and .833 OPS. He will turn 23 next week and originally signed out of Venezuela. Garcia could play any of the outfield positions with a plus arm. In 2024, Garcia had 24 doubles and 23 home runs in A and AA ball.
According to MLB.com, the 6’ outfielder had the some of the best raw power and strength in the Boston system, FanGraphs said Garcia has 'thunderous power to the opposite field'. He’s had success so far against left-handed and right-handed pitchers and is projected to hit 25-30 homers per season by MLB.com. He is nicknamed ‘The Password’ because of his hard to spell first name.
Travieso is 18-years-old also out of Venezuela and in rookie ball last year went 1-3 with a 2.77 ERA in 39 innings with 52 strikeouts to 25 walks with one home run allowed.
Oviedo came back at the end of the 2025 seasons after missing 2024 due to Tommy John surgery. Samaniego is 26-year-old left-handed pitcher who had a 3.08 ERA in 20 relief appearances in AA with 30 strikeouts in 26 innings and was a 15th round pick of the Pirates in 2021 out of South Alabama. Guzman is the Pirates fifth-round pick this year out of the University of Arizona and turned 22 on Thursday. Neither minor-league player was in the Pirates Top 30 prospects.
