Report: Pirates' Triolo to IL, Tsung-Che Cheng to be called up

According to a report, the Pirates are making a few moves ahead of their first divisional matchup of the season.

MLB.com’s Alex Stumpf reports that infielder Jared Triolo is going to the 10-day injured list with back issues.

Triolo was scratched before Sunday’s Pirates victory against the New York Yankees.

Taking Triolo’s spot on the roster will reportedly be infielder Tsung-Che Cheng.

The Triple-A Indianapolis short stop is ranked at the Pirates’ 17th best prospect in their farm system.

Cheng hit .225 last season with Triple-A Indy and Double-A Altoona with a .676 OPS.

Cheng made 20 plate appearances in Spring Training, hitting .353 with six hits, two doubles, one home run, two RBI, two walks and three strike outs.

The 23-year-old made his professional debut in 2021.

In addition to Triolo, Nick Gonzales is currently out with an ankle injury and Triple-A infield prospect Nick Yorke is currently out with a shoulder issue.
