Pitt pitcher back in MLB with Pirates

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pitt star pitcher Isaac Mattson is back in the majors, this time with the Pirates who called him up Tuesday afternoon. Mattson replaces Colin Holderman who is suffering from right thumb inflammation.

The 29-year-old Mattson was 2-0, four saves, 2.50 ERA, 16 games, 18 innings, 22 strikeouts, five walks with a 0.94 WHIP and .182 batting average against with AAA Indianapolis.

Originally a 19th round pick of the Angels out of Pitt in 2017, the right-hander made his MLB debut with the Orioles in 2021 and pitched in three games with the Pirates last year.

The 29-year-old Holderman was expected to be a big part of their bullpen this year. In 14 games, 0-1, 9.00 ERA, 15 innings, 20 hits, 11 walks, 11 strikeouts, 2.07 WHIP, .345 batting average against. Kelly said Holderman has been battling this injury for a little while.

In his last two outings, 2.2 innings, five runs, three walks and two strikeouts.
