The Steelers are keeping a key piece of their secondary. Pittsburgh is re-signing veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to a two-year deal, according to NFL reporter Josina Anderson.
Witherspoon, who spent the previous four seasons of his career with the 49ers, turned into a lockdown corner at the end of last year. He figures to start at corner next to Levi Wallace, whom the Steelers signed to a two-year deal earlier this week. Witherspoon’s presence allows the Steelers to shift Cameron Sutton to the slot, affording them a much deeper secondary with three young corners.
With Witherspoon signed, it seems like Joe Haden’s days in Pittsburgh are over. The veteran is an unrestricted free agent.
The Steelers have shelled out a franchise-record amount of money in free agency. In addition to Wallace, they’ve added Mitchell Trubisky, linebacker Myles Jack and offensive linemen Mason Cole and James Daniels.
