PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pirates have called up one of their best minor-league power hitters as right fielder Gregory Polanco goes on the injured list with an undisclosed injury.
Outfielder/infielder Hunter Owen was a 25th round pick in 2016 and between AA and AAA in 2019 hit 19 homers with 19 doubles and 53 RBI in 110 games. The 27-year-old, right-handed hitter, Owen had a .261 average. He played his college ball at Indiana State and can play left and right field along with third base.
"We like versatility and it's one of the reasons he was with us, because he could provide versatility. I think one of the coolest parts of my job is being able to tell guys they are a big-leaguer for the first time. So a really special moment for him."
Owen did not join the other prospects at the alt site in 2020, so it's been nearly two years since he played in a game and likely his first experience will be at the Major League level.
The veteran Polanco was hitting .200 this year with 3 HR and 5 RBI in 80 at bats.
