Regardless of Grandal injury, Davis not coming up

Derek Shelton explains why Henry Davis will stay in the minors

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – We are awaiting official word on the groin injury or ailment to Pirates catcher Yasmani Grandal suffered running in the ninth inning on Tuesday but there is one thing we did learn Wednesday afternoon about the status of catcher Henry Davis at AAA.

It won't be Davis coming back up to the Pirates in any scenario right now if Grandal misses games.

"There is still time to go," said Pirates manager Derek Shelton. "He has 40 at bats. What we are seeing we are really excited about, but we need him to keep going."

Shelton said Davis is more in the middle of the field than he was when he was with the Pirates. Davis' spray charts were mostly clean sheets from the shortstop to first base. The Bucs manager said one of Davis' home runs recently was dead center and there were other hits or at least solid contact in the middle of the field.

"He's making adjustments," Shelton said Wednesday before hosting the Giants. "If you see any video of him, he looks similar to the way he looked last year in terms of his setup and his load. That's something that is very important for us."

Davis has four homers in his last six AAA games, granted a pair were against position players pitching. He has raised his average 128 points in the last nine days and his OPS is now 1.107.

That is all great, but Henry Davis is not returning to Pittsburgh.

"He's an important part of what we are doing, so we have to get him on track," Shelton said.
