REPORT-Pitt basketball lands North Carolina transfer

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – After a series of players announcing they are leaving, Pitt reportedly landed its first player from the transfer portal Saturday night. According to Joe Tipton of @On3/@Rivals, North Carolina guard Jonathan Powell has committed to Pitt.

A 6’6” ,190-pound sophomore from Centerville, Ohio, Powell averaged 4.8 points in 16.3 minutes per game with UNC in 2025-26 and made at least one three in 24 games with multiple threes 10 times. Every game he had a multiple threes, the Tar Heels won.


Powell played his freshman season at West Virginia starting the final 23 games and averaged 8.3 points and 3.1 rebounds in 30.1 minutes per game. With only 18 turnovers, Powell had the lowest turnover percentage in the Big 12. Powell had 16 points with four three-pointers against Pitt.

Coming out of high school, he chose WVU over offers from Illinois, Cincinnati, Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas A&M , Michigan State, Wisconsin and others.
