He owns the lowest ERA in the MLB for a starting pitcher and now he will make his second consecutive All Star Game start. Paul Skenes was officially named the National League starter for Tuesday's game in Atlanta.

At just the age of 23, Skenes is the youngest pitcher to start in back to back All Star games. In just his second year of Major League Baseball, he has built an impressive resume.

He became the fifth rookie pitcher to start an All Star Game when he took the mound last year in Arlington. He faced four batters and pitched a scoreless inning. Skenes would go on to finish the 2024 season with a 1.96 ERA and win the NL Rookie of the Year Award. Despite his record being just 4-8 in 2025, his 2.01 ERA is a Major League best and he has struck out 131 batters in 121 innings.

National League manager Dave Roberts delivered the news to Skenes Saturday afternoon. He called Don Kelly and asked to speak to Paul. The Pirates X account captured the moment with a video.

"For the person who officially writes the lineup for the All Star game, I wanted to name you the 2025 National League starting pitcher," said Roberts.

"That's awesome. I appreciate that," responded Skenes.

"I think for me, watching from the other side, watching you compete, perform and be one of the faces of Major League Baseball, I just sit back in admiration. For me to write your name in the lineup, it's a huge honor, and I'm excited for you and for the fans," said Roberts.

"I appreciate that, it's a huge honor. Looking forward to meeting you and hopefully getting a win for the NL," Skenes said.

Skenes will throw the first inning against the American League's best hitters at the top of the order.

"One inning of domination. I know the fans can't wait. It's going to be a lot of fun," Roberts said to Skenes.
