PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The Pirates are pulling Paul Skenes from his start Sunday afternoon against the Red Sox. They are pushing him back to go on Wednesday instead against Detroit.
“Giving Paul more rest, he was ready to go, but feel it will give him a few more days to recover and as we go through that give other guys on the backside extra days as well,” said Pirates manager Don Kelly postgame after a 4-0 loss to Boston.
Skenes said they talked about it when he showed up to the field on Saturday afternoon.
“I was fully anticipating starting (Sunday),” Skenes said. “Ultimately it was Donny’s decision, but we had talked about it. Like I said after the last start, I’ll have his back.”
“I don’t necessarily disagree with the decision either.”
Skenes said he would have been able to start Sunday.
He said the decision can’t hurt in terms of recovery. He believes it should help.
“I wish it weren’t the case and I were starting tomorrow,” Skenes said. “That’s something I pride myself on, but in the long run it’s definitely best to get some recovery time.”
Skenes said there is nothing more physically taxing on him than any previous season he’s pitched. He said all pitchers are experiencing something right now given its mid-August.
“Everybody is dealing with stuff physically this year, he’s given us no indication that he is injured,” Kelly said.
They say it’s rest. Whatever you call it Skenes has struggled and the Pirates are hoping a few days down will help him out of it.
