PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – No doubt the best part of the Pirates roster is starting pitching, when that fails... Yankees score six runs in the fifth inning for a 10-4 win at PNC Park Saturday.
“Just a horrendous job by me in the fifth,” said starter Bailey Falter. “Team takes the lead, does whatever it can to get the lead for me. I go out next inning and can’t get one out. Just can’t happen.”
A day after Mitch Keller said it was his fault in a 9-4 loss Friday, Falter lasted only four innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits with a walk, hit batter and five strikeouts. Keller also gave up seven runs, walking four in 3.2 innings. Take away Paul Skenes on Wednesday, Thomas Harrington in his MLB debut on Tuesday, four innings, seven hits, six earned runs, four walks. Carmen Mlodzinski is being turned back into a starter after a few years in the bullpen-3.2 innings, seven hits, four runs, two walks.
Aside from Skenes, that’s four starts, 15.1 innings, 24 runs and a 14.10 ERA.
Reliever Colin Holderman gave up a run in an inning, however the lone hit was a three-run double that cleared the bases, including a pair of inherited runners. The former Pirates set-up man now has a 9.64 ERA and has given up at least a run in four of his five appearances. His WHIP is 2.14.
“We are trying to find him a spot, maybe earlier in the game to get him going,” Shelton said. “We got to figure out a way to get him going.”
Yankees Trent Grisham homered twice driving in four runs, Anthony Volpe drove in three. Everyone in the New York lineup had at least one hit.
Ke’Bryan Hayes had a pair of hits including an RBI double. Enmanuel Valdez started at first base for the Pirates and had a two-run double. Endy Rodiguez drove in the other run.
The game ended with a deafening chant of 'Let's Go Yankees' as many of the 30,570 in attendance wore New York jerseys.
