The Steelers made a series of coaching moves on Thursday, according to reports.
In addition to retaining Mike Sullivan as quarterbacks coach, they’re bringing in two other coaches.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Steelers are hiring Jets assistant Zach Azzanni as their wide receivers coach and Tom Arth as a passing game coach.
Azzanni spent five seasons with the Denver Broncos before coaching last year with the New York Jets.
He was a wide receiver at Central Michigan University between 1994-1998.
He coached for several colleges between 1999 and 2016 before coaching the wide receivers in Chicago with the Bears.
The hiring ends the hope for some Steelers fans that were hoping Hines Ward would come back to Pittsburgh as wide receivers.
Arth would have worked closely with one of the best young quarterbacks in the game. Justin Herbert and the Chargers were fifth in the AFC in passing yards (4,312) and eighth in passing touchdowns (24) in 2023. In 2022, the Chargers were second in pass yards (4,791) and sixth in passing TD (26).
LA was his first professional coaching experience, Arth served as head coach of the University of Akron (2019-21), University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (2017-18) and John Carroll University (2013-16). Arth was two-time Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
The Cleveland native set 18 school records over his playing career at John Carroll and named a consensus All-American his final two years. He was a backup to Peyton Manning with the Colts for three years (2003-05) with Tony Dungy as head coach. He also spent a training camp with Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay in 2006 and played in NFL Europe, the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League.
