PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – They both had contract situations end right before the first game of the season. They are the back-to-back defensive players of the year and both have brothers who also were stars in the NFL. TJ Watt says he has a lot of respect for Nick Bosa and how he plays the game. As for the challenge of trying to come back and play without normal training camp reps?

“If anything, it’s fresh legs,” Watt said Friday. “It’s a lot of want to and desire. The guy hasn’t been able to play a lot of football in a long time. You want to come back and be as explosive and powerful and show everybody the work you’ve been putting in even though you haven’t been able to do team activities.”

“I think you can expect the guy to go out there and play his butt off.”

Joey 1st game

He had a pick in his first preseason game and first ever opportunity at Acrisure Stadium, now Joey Porter, Junior continues the family legacy of playing for the Steelers for real on Sunday.

“I’m really calm right now,” Joey Porter, Junior said. “I’m not thinking too much of the moment. I know what I got in front of me. I’m mainly excited to go out with my teammates. We’ve been working since before camp and OTAs, we’ve been working for a minute. Now it’s finally time where these games mean something.”

Porter isn’t scheduled to start Sunday, but he will play a number of meaningful snaps. Coaches say Porter has earned that with the improvements he’s made.

“I feel like it came a long way,” Porter, Junior said. “Coming out of college, you feel like you know everything, but you really don’t until you get out there with the guys.”

Watt Ads

Whether it’s selling taco kits with his brothers or candy bars by himself, TJ Watt is on your TV more than just during a football game. The 28-year-old enjoys it and isn’t afraid to put himself out there, out of his comfort zone a little bit.

“It’s always a lot more difficult when my brothers aren’t with me to loosen me up,” TJ Watt said. “Old El Paso was a fun one to do obviously with Derek and JJ. Snickers was fun to show some personality, but not too much.”

“You should have seen the outfit they wanted me to wear, I settled for the chain around the jeans. Just having some fun, trying to show some personality.”

“That commercial was funny,” said linebacker Alex Highsmith. “What did he say, it was funny, some heavy metal band? I was laughing with him about it. It was a good commercial.”

“I was a baby actor. It’s been a long time, so I try not to give any lessons.”

Watt said guys were teasing him about it, but he can handle it. TJ also said he’s not a metal head, couldn’t name one song, he’s into Zach Bryan.

Quote of the Week

A former 49er, linebacker Kwon Alexander said it’s San Francisco’s goal to get guys in space and then yards after catch. How he combats that?

“Be prepared to hit & make them not move afterwards.”
