PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Most teams recognize notable anniversaries, last year the Steelers celebrated the Super Bowl XL win. There is another anniversary this year that likely won’t be celebrated. The Steelers last playoff win was 10 years ago.
Who would have thought at the time the 18-16 final at Kansas City would be the only postseason victory in a decade? It wasn’t a pretty game, but Le’Veon Bell rushed for 170 yards and Chris Boswell kicked six field goals and an offensive holding penalty on a two-point conversion negated a tie and the Steelers defense stopped Alex Smith on the second attempt. Ryan Shazier had an interception, James Harrison three tackles for loss and Artie Burns a fumble recovery.
In the seven playoff games since, seven consecutive losses and outscored 260-154. It’s not even that close as 54 points the Steelers scored were in the fourth quarter of a decided game.
They’ve given up 37 points a game in those games against New England, Jacksonville, Cleveland, Kansas City, Buffalo, Baltimore and Houston. Three of those games, including the two highest scoring games, were at home.
Over the 154 points the Steelers have scored, 53 have come in the first halves of those games, while opponents have scored 150 points. The closest game was the most recent, the Texans scored 23 in the fourth quarter last season in Pittsburgh, leading 7-6 at half.
Steelers can’t go into the season chasing ghosts, but considering the depth in the AFC right now with a pair of MVP quarterbacks in your own division, let alone MVPs Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.
