PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – With middle relief being an area where the Pirates have struggled early, the team made a change with the pitcher off to the slowest start.

Right-hander Jose Urquidy was sent to AAA Indianapolis for right-hander Cam Sanders.

In six innings at AAA this year, the 29-year-old Sanders had a 3.00 ERA and 11 strikeouts holding opponents to a .190 batting average. However, he did walk seven and his WHIP was 1.83.

Sanders started his Major League career in 2018 and made his MLB debut with the Pirates last year-6.2 innings, 8.10 ERA, five walks and four strikeouts.

Sanders was originally drafted by his hometown Padres in the 18th round in 2017, but went back to college, transferred to LSU and was drafted by the Cubs in the 12th round in 2018.

Urquidy is about to be 31 and is 0-1, 8.53 ERA in five games, 6.1 innings, 15 hits, two walks, six strikeouts and a 2.68 WHIP. He gave up four runs in an inning against the Nationals on Monday.

Bucs host the Rays Friday night as 93.7 The Fan’s Chris Mueller, and former Pirate AJ Burnett, throw out the first pitch at 6:40.
