The father of Neil Walker has passed away.

Tom Walker played in the Major Leagues for six seasons with the Montreal Expos, Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Cardinals and California Angels.

The Pirates released a statement following Walker’s passing.

A long-time resident of Pittsburgh, Tom was a part of our local alumni group and was always looking to make an impact on others in the Pittsburgh community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Walker family, including his wife Carolyn, daughter Carrie, and sons Matt, Sean, and Neil, in addition to his son-in-law Don Kelly and the Kelly family.

Walker almost joined Roberto Clemente for his relief mission to Nicaragua after and earthquake around Christmas in 1972.

He offered to join Clemente on the plane, but he told Walker the plane was full and to go enjoy his New Year’s Eve. Walker found out later that Clemente’s plane had crashed, killing the Pirates outfielder.

Walker is a member of the Texas League Hall of Fame.

Walker was signed by the Pirates as a free agent in 1978, and attended Spring Training camp with the Bucs before retiring.

Walker was 74-years-old.

We at the Fan and KDKA Radio want to send our sympathies to the Walker family and everyone that knew Tom.

He was always open and willing to talk baseball with us on the radio. We are grateful for his friendship and community service.
