Mike Tomlin is now the longest-tenured coach in North American sports

One of the greatest coaches in sports history announced he is stepping away on Friday.

After 29 years as the Head Coach of the San Antonio Spurs, Gregg Popovich is transitioning from coach to present of the team’s basketball operations.

With Popovich stepping away, that leaves Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin as the longest-tenured coach in North American pro sports.

Sports insider Andrew Siciliano was the first to point this out.

Being the Steelers’ head coach is historically one of the most stable jobs in sports, with only three different men leading the team since 1969.

Now, it literally is the most-tenured job on the continent.

2025 will be the 19th season for Tomlin leading the Steelers, taking over in 2007 for Bill Cowher.

Tomlin has won one Super Bowl championship and been to another.

Popovich won five NBA titles with the Spurs between 1996 and 2025.
