The Steelers will report to training camp next month. And that, really, is seemingly the only guarantee about the much beloved and anticipated event for Steelers fans from around the world.
Tomlin spoke with the media Thursday following the completion of the team's final minicamp session, and was asked about what he envisions happening, and would like to happen, when the team next meets as a collective group.
"I've got some calendars on my desk, so I'm ready for whatever," Tomlin said. "But we haven't received any official word on some of the details regarding training camp. Rest assured, regardless of where we are and when we are, we'll be ready.
The Steelers have moved their operations out to Latrobe's Saint Vincent College every summer since 1967, with the exception being last year, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the team to use their South Side practice facility and Heinz Field for training camp.
Thousands of fans file into Latrobe's Chuck Noll Field each year, as some use it as an annual summer destination.
Earlier this week, the Dallas Cowboys were informed that they would be allowed to hold training camp in Oxnard, California. But Tomlin has yet to get the approval he seeks from the NFL.
"I had an expectation, I thought I would know by now," he said. "We don't always get what we want, as we know, when you're dealing with policy and global decision making and things of that nature. I had hoped to get some clarity prior to now, but I haven't."
There is, however, growing optimism in and around the organization that training camp will be held at Sant Vincent College in July and August, but that fan and media admittance could look different than previous years based on the NFL's COVID-19 guidelines.
