PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The Pirates Opening Day shortstop and home opener third baseman was placed on injured reserve on Sunday.
Pirates GM Ben Cherington saying on the Pirates Insider Show on the Pirates Radio Network and 93.7 The Fan that Jared Triolo suffered a patellar tendon injury during the Friday game against Baltimore. He rounded third base to score two days ago and felt something in his knee. He finished the game, but there was swelling after the game.
Cherington described the time Triolo will miss as a ‘weeks long’ injury. The Bucs GM said Triolo will be back for the ‘lion’s share of the season’.
Billy Cook benefitted by getting the call-up. Cherington said it was a tough decision to send him down when the team brought Konnor Griffin to Pittsburgh, because Cook’s such a good team guy.
Nick Gonzales and Nick Yorke will battle for opportunities at third base or other spots.
“It’s an opportunity for Donny to use both and give both some runway and see where they take it,” Cherington said with Jason Mackey on the Pirates Radio Network and 93.7 The Fan. “Both guys we believe in. Both are not natural third baseman, but both have worked hard to become competent at that position.”
“For the short term, we are going to see a lot of both of those guys at third.”
