Where does the shortstop prospect rank in Pirates system

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – What did the Pirates get at the trade deadline for Gold Glove third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes on Wednesday?

LHP Taylor Rogers

Rogers is not a prospect, the 34-year-old will be a free agent after the season after signing for three years, $33 million with San Francisco in 2023. He was traded to the Reds for a minor leaguer in January. Those are two of the five teams he’s played for since 2021-the Twins, Padres and Brewers being the others.

During his last two seasons, Rogers has a sub 2.50 ERA. This season in 40 appearances, 2.45 ERA, 33 innings, 19 walks, 34 strikeouts and a 1.45 WHIP. In his career he’s allowed a .198 average against left-handed hitters with only 10 home runs allowed in 777 plate appearances by lefties.

INF Sammy Stafura

Immediately becomes the Pirates sixth-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline ahead of Nick Yorke (acquired at last years’ deadline) among others. The right-handed hitter is known for his speed and fielding. Drafted out of high school in the second round by the Reds in 2023, Stafura is 6’, 188 pounds. He signed for over-slot money ($2.5 million) to stay in the draft.

In 88 games in The Florida State League (low A) he hit .262 with an impressive .393 on-base percentage and .804 WHIP. He hit only four home runs, but nine triple and 18 doubles. The 20-year-old also stole 28 bases. The New York native played 82 of the 88 games at short with a.968 fielding percentage with 47 double plays turned. He projects to be in the majors in 2027.

Of the Pirates top 11 prospects according to MLB Pipeline, six are in A ball.
