PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – When Aaron Rodgers first signed with the Steelers he discussed many of the Pittsburghers he’s encountered in his life from Tom Clements to Luke Getsy, but he’s working again with Mike McCarthy. The California native admits the Greenfield vernacular can be a big challenging.
“I mean, it's tough sometimes,” Rodgers said laughing, but serious about McCarthy’s Pittsburghese. “That's why you really got to study the plan because he'll say a word that if he just, like, spell it out, even if you're doing hooked-on phonics, it would not sound anywhere near what he's saying.”
“So, you’ve got to know the plan pretty well to fill in the gaps in the language barrier.”
Imagine if you need a first dahn and some jagoff is being nebby about your plays n’at, and the doohickey helmet ain’t working right and you got a hankerin to call a big play, but it’s slippy.
It’s mostly in good fun, but you could tell there have been times in their decade-plus relationship where Rodgers wasn’t quite sure what his head coach was saying.
Doesn’t mean they don’t have a good rapport. Rodgers said there is a lot of trust both ways. He seemed genuinely excited to see how their sequel plays out in walking distance of McCarthy’s childhood home.
“This is a big deal for Mike, and like it would be for anybody going and coaching at a pro football team in their hometown,” Rodgers said. “So, I'm really happy for Mike. It's a great full-circle moment for him, and excited to go out and put on
some good film for Mike this weekend.”
“This is heavy, being here,” McCarthy said. “You ride the streets that you grew up,
that you walk walked on, and do it every day. So, so many great memories here. Some memories are heavy. So, yeah, that's real.”
“I'm at the point in my life, at this age, I reflect more than I did 10, 15 years ago. So, that's all part of it. So, yeah, definitely, I've had time to do that.”

“But the most important part of it is the fact that you're the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers—which I have a tremendous amount of pride in, not only being from here—but what the Pittsburgh Steelers stand for, and the responsibility that myself and everybody has to this organization and really for the players and coaches before us. So, trust me, that lays on me every single day. It's important. It makes me jump out of bed.”
