Witnesses told responding officers the teen was riding a skateboard when a group of young people met him at the intersection and a brief altercation occurred, which resulted in the victim being pushed into traffic lanes.

The boy was struck by a white Tesla that was eastbound on Stetson Avenue. Police said the driver, a 52-year-old man, stopped immediately and is cooperating with investigators, adding that the driver is not suspected of driving while intoxicated and speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The teen was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, but police said he is expected to survive.

The group of young people fled the scene following the crash and Hemet police detectives are working to identify them and their exact involvement in “this seemingly senseless incident,” police said.

The teen’s skateboard also is missing, police added.

Hemet police said they are interested in any dash-cam video from motorists who were in the area at the time of the crash as well as any video of the group of suspects leaving the area.

Anyone with information about the investigation is urged to contact Sgt. Gabe Gomez at (951) 765-2396 or ggomez@hemetca.gov.
