Governor Gavin Newsom is proposing another hundred million to help survivors of the Palisades and Eaton fires rebuild. But a group of Altadena residents wants to know what happened to the $2.5 billion he promised last year.
During a news conference on Thursday, fire survivors and advocates said they need what was promised to them.
“The stakes are far too high not to,” one woman said.
After the Eaton and Palisades fires, the governor dedicated $2.5 billion in relief, but the homeowners and groups here in front of a destroyed lot say they haven't seen a dime of it and want an audit on how and where the money was spent.
“Let's trace the money. Let's trace the ball dropping, and let's pick it up, and let's put it into the Altadenan’s houses and people who are on the edge,” another woman said.
The group says there's at least a billion dollars of the relief money that was not spent, and they questioned the governor, wanting to add an additional $100 million to rebuilding efforts, money to help homeowners secure loans.
“Let's do the math - gap funding is real, and you can't keep expecting to say, ‘OK, we're going to give these people some money to help them, but it's a loan,’” a woman said.
