(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Despite efforts to block robocalls from blowing up our phones, data from websites that track the automated calls reveal the volume of calls is holding steady.
But many are still getting a lot of calls like this one:
“We are giving you a final courtesy call before we close out your file. Press ‘2’ to be removed and put on our ‘Do not call’ list.”
That’s a little robocall humor — don’t press 2.
According to Robokiller and YouMail, Americans received about 4.3 billion robocalls in February 2023. That’s roughly the same number of calls reported each month dating back to August 2022.
Although Robokiller reported that calls about extended car warranties have pretty much disappeared, it is expected that spam text messages will increase throughout 2023.
In November 2022, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul signed on with a national task force that targeted two companies accused of orchestrating robocalls. Raoul said those who receive robocalls should immediately hang up if they suspect fraudulent activity.
Raoul also instructed residents never to provide personal information to suspicious callers.
