Antioch mayor arrested for suspicion of DUI

The mayor of Antioch is speaking out following his arrest early Saturday for suspicion of driving under the influence.

Mayor Lamar Thorpe posted a video to Twitter concerning the arrest.

"Under the advice of counsel, I am limited in what I can share with you but I felt it was important to be open and direct with you," Thorpe said.

Thorpe was stopped shortly before 1:30 a.m. while driving northbound on I-680 near Monument Boulevard in Concord, the California Highway Patrol confirmed KCBS Radio in a statement. "After having dinner with a friend, I was pulled over by the CHP and cited for driving under the influence for that I take full responsibility," he explained.

In the video, Thorpe disclosed some information about the incident and asked the residents of Antioch for forgiveness.

"Although I never felt inhibited by the drink I had with my dinner," he said. "I am deeply sorry for the lapse in judgment and I hope you can forgive me."

Mayor Thorpe and Antioch City Clerk Ellie Householder are both facing a recall election. "You have my full commitment that I will grow and learn from this moment and continue to work diligently on behalf of the residents of Antioch," he said.

Thorpe was released at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, the CHP said.

KCBS Radio has reached out to the City of Antioch for comment but has not yet heard back.
