The California Watermelon Festival is preparing to celebrate the beginning of summer 2025 by sharing “a sweet slice of California” with the community this June.
The Watermelon Festival started as a relatively small event in the 70s at Sunland-Tujunga, hosting about 500 people.
Now, festival CEO Edward Campos says about 30,000 people attend this one-of-a-kind event where visitors can pet a goat, ride a pony, and eat all sorts of watermelon creations.
"At our festival, we use a watermelon as a base for food dishes," Campos told KNX News' Nataly Tavidian. "So we have the deep-fried watermelon, the barbecue watermelon sauce, watermelon cannoli, on tacos, watermelon soda, watermelon cheesecake, deep-fried watermelon with cream cheese, you name it, watermelon popsicles."
The list goes on and on, and Campos said, "People love it."
This year, the sweet event will take place June 7 and 8 at the Hansen Dam Recreation Area Soccer Fields.
Attendees can also expect live music, DJs, and live graffiti art with artists, painting, you guessed it, watermelon-themed murals.
