IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KNX) – A student cinematographer from Chapman University was killed Friday after the car they were in rolled over.

It happened in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, according to California Highway Patrol.
The student, along with three USC film students, were riding a 2022 Can-Am Maverick UTV when the vehicle “overturned down the sand dune,” CHP officials said.
“All of those on board were wearing their safety harness apart from the deceased,” Officer Arturo Platero told the Los Angeles Times. “The individual suffered fatal injuries in the rollover.”
Stephen Galloway, dean of Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University told the Los Angeles Times identified the student as Peng Wang. Wang was a third year graduate student from China.
“We have extraordinarily strict safety protocols, but in this case, we had a student who volunteered on an independent project and we have no control over those,” Galloway told the outlet.
“I cannot imagine anything worse than a terrifically talented, brilliant young cinematographer dying on a production, and I’m outraged that strict safety measures were not in place on this.”
CHP said the accident remains under investigation.
