SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – It has been revealed that the man who was arrested for stabbing a woman in San Francisco's Chinatown had been released from prison just nine days before.
Fook Poy Lai, 61, was serving a nine year sentence for attempted murder when he was released on parole on May 20.
Lai was arrested again on May 29 after allegedly walking into AA Bakery & Cafe at 1068 Stockton St. and repeatedly plunging a knife into the back of a female employee.
Bakery customer Ding Lee told KPIX that after the attack the suspect was strangely calm.
"He's just so quiet and just stayed there," Lee said, recounting the incident. "The actions, you know, you immediately feel he's not a normal person."
The San Francisco Standard reported that court documents show Lai was convicted of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon in 2018 for stabbing an 89-year-old man in Chinatown's Portsmouth Square in 2016.
Lai was sentenced to nine years in prison, but was released just nine days before the AA Bakery stabbing.
The employee is recovering from life-threatening injuries at SF General Hospital and is expected to be discharged soon.
